Education- Are we on the move?

The recent spate of public outcry on the lack of seats fro 128 students for certain critical courses at the public universities is indeed  cause of concern for al of us. the new meritocracy-based intake is said to be not affecting the desired result. Being a society that places emphasis on academic result, to be denied entry to university surely raises a question of self worthiness and causes dejected feeling among many. We have seen how parents beam in pride when talking of their children who made successful entry to higher learning institutions . It is not wrong to say that to most of us, if not all, securing a place in the university is the first step toward an independent and successful future. In view  of the nature of the society , we must say kudos to the government for 'serving justice' to the 128 displaced students by providing them an opportunity to pursue the course of their choice. But , we have to remember , that the opportunity was rightly given to then because they had achieved excellent academic results as well as were active in co-curricular movements.

Therefore , the nagging question for us is whether this community has or will have the competitive edge over the rest of the population in pursuit of higher education.  Are our children able to compete with others in whatever field of study they undertake. This brings upon another question, which is , are they being provided with the necessary facilities to excel and thereby compete with others?

More importantly what is the role of community to enhance the viability of our children? We must , not disregard children of poorer families. They too deserve a chance to receive higher education if capable. Should the community setup a fund or assistance for the deserving and needy students? If so where do we get the resources from?

These are the questions and situations facing the Malabari community in the current socio economic scenario. Indeed the importance of education  cannot be undermined. The question is how far we are willing to do to archive a better level of participation from this community to groom the growing number of students and professionals
