titleRamadhan

Ramadhan the 9th month of the Islamic Calendar is the most revered month in Islam. During this much awaited month of fasting and prayers the Muslims fast throughout the day from sunrise to sunset known as  "Nombu" in Malayalam and "saum" in Arabic.

The breaking of fast  ( 'Nombu turakkal' in Malayalam), simple but delicious delicacies are prepared at home. This is done at homes and masjids. Sometimes close friends are invited to break fast together. In  Malaysia daily breaking fasts are held in masjids run by Malabaris or otherwise, sponsored by individuals, is also an event where families meet regularly. At modern times breaking fasts are also done in hotels together with other Muslim communities.

"Pathiri" is a usual Malabari dish prepared during breaking of fast. "Jiirakakanyi" is a porridge prepared said to have cooling effect usually taken after breaking of fast.

The night of Ramadhan usually filled with prayers. Taraweeh is a special prayers conducted of 20 rakaats, conducted after the regular night prayer of Isha'. Lately there are some masjids that conduct this prayers in 8 rakaats.

Muthaazham ( the earlier meals) itaken after the Taraweeh prayers is usually heavier that the lighter meals taken for breaking fast.

Atthaazham - literally means mean- (sahur in Malay) is taken early in the mornings before sunrise. This meal is delayed as much as possible as prescribed in Islam

Two important days celebrated during this month. 'Badr dinam'  is the day of Badr  on the 17th of Ramadhan commemorating the day when the battle of Badr took place in the year 2nd Hijrah. Badr Maulud is commonly read in masjids and sometimes Badr Maala ( in Malayalam ) is sung. Rice ("cheerani") distribution is also done in masjids".

The night (eve) of the 27th Ramadhan known as "irupathi ezham raavu" is also revered.  This day is celebrated as the most likely to be the "night of power" described in the Quran. Alms are given out the the poor during this day to ensure they can celebrated the eid just 3 days away!!
