Circumcision is a common rite among many cultures and religions in the world. The Muslims call it "Khittan" or "Sunnath'. Most Fiqh scholars agree that circumcision is obligatory upon the men. Afew others consider it not obligatory but is still strongly recommended.

The Malabaris also call it 'Maarkham'. In the olden days there was elaborate cultural traditions attached to this occasion, akin to marriages. Similar cultural set up was also practiced in the Malay community who also call it 'Masuk Jawi'.
